Arrive in Cali if you are coming from outside of the city! In the afternoon we’ll
have a short orientation to go over do’s & dont’s on the trip, and then take a
history walking tour with History Underground to get a bit of background on Cali,
the Pacific Region and more specifically Timbiquí.
Wake up early for our trip to Timbiquí - a car will pick you up from your
accommodation and we’ll begin the journey to Buenaventura! After we
arrive in Buenaventura we’ll take a 3 hour boat ride to Santa Barbara de
Timbiquí.
This day you’ll meet your “homestay hosts” for the trip! This a family home
where you’ll have lunch for the days we are in Timbiquí before the daily
Medio-Dias (musical processions to the church).
After some lunch and a rest, we’ll take a short tour of the municipal capital
of Timbiquí, to understand it’s context and where we’ll be for the next few
days. Followed by a welcome dinner hosted by Alborada de Timbiquí.
We’ll end our day with group dinner in the Centro of Cali, head home
to pack and get lots of rest for our trip to Timbiquí!

Percussion class with two of the famous Balanta Brothers and some young
musicians to learn about the traditional rhythms of music from the southern
Pacific! Here we’ll learn about the lives, successes, and struggles as elder
musicians and culture keepers for the municipality.
December 4th is dedicated to the Festivities for the patron Saint of Timbiqui,
Santa Barbara. This day will be fully dedicated to participating in the town’s
Catholic traditions like mass and any religious processions for the
celebration of the Saint.
After lunch, we can rest and take a nap and have some free time to get
ready for the huge concert and party in the evening!
In the afternoon we’ll host an English class, this is a perfect moment to
integrate with the community, especially youth, and share our various
cultures through teaching a bit of the English language!
After dinner we’ll meet up to watch the floating parade of lights and music
on the river.
